Ark P2

P2 is a new data centre built in 2014 on a former UK Ministry of Defence site. It's still surrounded by the MOD, and close to a bunker that was once supposed to house the Government in the event of nuclear war.

Data Centre Features

We are currently waiting for Ark to get back to us with the data centre specifications. Here's what we think they're going to say:

• Purpose-built data centres. Not converted office buildings.
• Connectivity: two diverse fibre routes connect every data hall.
• Two physically separate power feeds to each data hall (data centre building).
• Backup generators able to power the data centre's full operational load for 72 hours.
• 24/7 manned campus.
• Security staff check and logs all persons and vehicles visiting the site.
• Data halls have their own prison-grade fencing with anti-climb features, prison-grade fencing.
• Air-cooling (rather than mechanically cooled), for over 99% of the year.
• Rain water harvesting supports environmentally-friendly supplemental water cooling.
• Solar panels on the roof boost environmental friendliness.
• 24/7 service desk.
• Data centre operator controls and supervises any on-campus civil works.
• Data centre operator owns the relevant freehold.
• Dedicated electricity substation within the secure campus.
• The management of the data centre is independently audited.
• Ark's Shield Park (the data centre campus of which P2 is part) has been granted the Uptime Institute’s Management & Operations (M&O) Stamp of Approval

P2 stands for Phase 2. Phase 1 was when they built data hall P1.
